Gardening according to the calendar

To begin with, it is important to know that you cannot garden in all seasons because plants and seeds need a favorable climate and temperature to grow properly. Gardening is a step-by-step process to get the best possible result.

Autumn is the ideal time to replant shrubs and fruit trees. The season is favorable to the rains which allow the plants to make some roots before the winter. Your plants will grow faster during the spring and will be more resistant to face summers with low rainfall.

The end of winter is the ideal time to “prepare” the soil (clean up, pull weeds…), for the bravest among us! Start thinking about your future plantings, choose the vegetables/flowers/fruits you want for the future garden, and make a plan on paper. You can create a vegetable or landscape garden, or a combination of both. You must take into account the harmony of the colors for a landscape garden, and the size that the plants and the adult plants will take for a vegetable garden.

When the sun appears again, in March-April, we dig the soil and we can start planting the first vegetables (artichoke, eggplant, carrot, kohlrabi, green beans, turnip, parsley, radish, tomatoes, shallots, onions. …), perennials (columbine, forget-me-not, iris, peony, lily of the valley, blueberry, primrose…) and red fruit bushes (blueberry, raspberry, mulberry, currant…).

From the middle of spring (in May), you can plant broccoli, celeriac, zucchini, gherkins, cucumbers, endives, white beans, melon, pepper, leeks, peppers… Flowers: petunias, geraniums, fuchsias…

Choosing your plants and seeds

Not all regions allow gardening of all types of plants/fruits/vegetables/flowers. Some plants do not grow when temperatures are too low, or on the contrary too high, when frost is too frequent, the sun is too strong, the soil is too humid… In addition, not all soils have the same composition and are therefore not the same (different types of soils: clay, sandy …).

When you choose your seeds and plants, as a beginner, you must take into account these different elements. Otherwise, you could be disappointed and discouraged to never see anything bloom or grow in your garden…

The prices of seeds and plants vary according to the type of flowers, fruits, and vegetables you want to obtain. It is up to you to compare the offers in the different specialized stores and supermarkets.

Acquire the right equipment at the best price

To garden well, you must acquire the basic equipment

Proceed with the planting in three steps

First of all, you must define the plot of land (at least 50 m²) that you wish to devote to your vegetable or landscape garden, and make sure that it is sunny. Delineate it in a visible way.

The day before planting the seeds and/or plants, spade the soil, remove weeds and stones, then water abundantly. On the day, put on your gloves, and let’s go!

To plant the seeds: dig 3-4 cm furrows, then place the seeds 5 cm to 15 cm apart, depending on the size of the adult plant (including vegetables), cover with soil, rake, and finally water in fine rain. For the seedlings, the same operation but with 15-20 cm furrows and 20-25 cm spaces between each plant, according to the adult size of the plants too.

Once planted, your seeds and plants will need to be monitored and maintained. It is important to water them regularly. The pruning shears will allow you to cut the damaged shoots and stimulate regrowth. You can also opt for natural or chemical fertilizer.

At the beginning of summer, you will finally be rewarded for your efforts, even if gardening should be considered as a pleasure, and you will start to harvest with happiness your first vegetables/fruits, and to see your first flowers appear!
